School of Saatchi- Weird yet understandable

After watching the TV show School of Saatchi I feel my perception of Art as a whole has changed. Before, I felt art was just paintings and sculptures but after watching School of Saatchi I feel that art has expanded to more than just paintings and sculptures. I believe it has become more imaginative and more bold and it makes you think when you look at it.
At first while watching the first episode of School of Saatchi I just didn't understand the fascination with Installation art. To me it seemed more like a over imaginative sculptor and I just didn't understand why someone would do it or how they came up with these crazy ideas. Also one of the ideas that one of the artists had done (if you can call her an artist) was just absolutely baffling. It was a whistle hanging from a towel rack and it just didn't get it. I mean how do you come up with something like that and worst still she went through to the next round. After watching the first episode of School of Saatchi I thought it was absolutely crazy that anybody could think that that was art of any kind.
However after watching the second episode of School of Saatchi I started to feel a bit different towards contemporary art. In the episode the 6 artists were separated into 3 groups and were told told to come up with a project that the people would enjoy. The one that enjoyed the most was Saad and Ben's ghost huts. I understand it more than the rest and enjoyed it more because it symbolized the past.
In the same episode they talked about an artist called Martin Creed and his work. I just don't understand how this guy has become so famous. He made money from just scrunching up a piece of A4 paper, where do you see art in that, I just don't know.
Overall i find contemporary art really odd but I do understand where some artists are coming from and I do like some of their ideas. It's weird yet it is understandable ins ome cases.

Induction blog entry

Why have I chosen to do the creative and media course?
I wanted to come to college and study the creative and media course because it links in with my future career goal which is to work for a newspaper or news website. I was attracted towards the course because I was interested in what the course involves, such as video and sound production. Also I have enjoyed media studies at school and have done well in the past getting a B grade at GCSE.

What do I aim to achieve during the course?
During my time on the course I hope to gain an understanding of how newspaper companies work and hope to gain a bit of work experience involving this as well. Also by gaining this work experience I hope to gain a bit of knowledge about a media environment such as a newspaper office.

What are my career ambitions for the future?
In the future I hope to see myself involved in working for a newspaper or for a news website. I am not entirely certain what role I would like to take working for a newspaper. But if I was to choose I would be a reporter or an online reporter on the website or maybe a photographer.

In a perfect world where would I be and what would I being doing in ten years time?
If it was a perfect world I would like to have seen myself playing professional cricket and in ten years time playing for my country but it's unlikely now! Also in a perfect world I would like to have what I call my ten car garage. In this garage I would have my ten favourite cars.

What are my strongest skills or abilities?
My strongest skills are probably my hobbies, like playing pool. I have found myself to be pretty good at it. Also cricket - over the years I have played a lot of cricket and have got better at it as the years have passed. My other skills involve computing and video gaming.

What do I need to improve on?
I think the biggest thing I need to improve on is organisation. I am not the best organised person. I am not really good at organising handouts and coursework.

What do I think is important for working well in a team?
A good team player needs to have good communication skills, be able to work with others and be well organised.

What am I most excited about achieving in the next 2 years?
I am most excited about gaining experience for a newspaper company.

voxpops

Technical issues?

I think we need have different angles when doing our establishing shots to make it look better. Also next time we need to let the camera roll in and roll out for 10 seconds so when we have finished a voxpop let the camera keep going for 10 seconds.

Questions asked
1. What do you think about the square at the moment? Is it somewhere where you spend time frequently? What improvements would you make?

2. Do you think the money being spent is worth it or could be used for something better?

3.Do you think it would be successful or a disaster?

This is the jist of the questions as a the start of the question we give the interviewee some information that links to the question. I think with the questions we need to memorise them so we don't stutter and it looks more professional.

Location issues?

We need to find locations that have less background noise and also where this more people to ask. I think we also need more location shots so we can get a better look at bradford and also other places of attraction around bradford as well.

3 successful elements

1. the voxpops were good because who answered were really entusiastic.
2. Panning shot was good because it captured most of centenary square.
3. The answers given by the inteviewee weere good because because the answers were indepth.

3 less succesful elements?

1. location shot because need a few more.
2. the noise was distracting as well.
3. piece to camera needs more planning

Libbys Prsentation

I think Libby's presentation was good as she had alot to say and I thought it was good as she didn't really refer to script. She knew what she was saying and when to say it. She had good voice projection, so i could hear her nice and clearly. She put alot of thought into it and overall I think it was good.
I think was bad about Libby's presentation was that she didn't really speak as if she was wanting the job, she was just talking as if she was talking to her mates.

Risk Asessment and Presentation

Risk assesment
For the 'day in the life' project I had to think of what risks I might come up across when I am doing the photography. After writing each risk I had to give a rating on the risk on how possible it was that it was going to happen, with the rating being between 1 and 10, 10 being really possible. I then had to give another rating on the danger of each particular risk and it is the same rating scheme as the possibility rating.
With that done I then had to write what steps I would take to combat each risk so they don't happen. The final thing was to write about some considerations that were necessary.
I feel the risk assessment was good idea to do because it allowed you to think about the risks before hand and also it made you think how to prevent each risk.

Presentation
Since we were treating this like a proper job we had to create a presentation that showed what were wanting to do and why we wanted to do it. Since my idea is to do 'a day in the life of' a amateur football team I first talked about the team saying where they were based and what league they competed and where they play. I then went onto to talk about research that I had done to get inspirations and ideas on what to take and where to take them. And then giving my ideas on how I can link the two photographers work with my own work.
The next thing thing I did was talk about what I was going to take so I started off talking about what was possible to take before the game begins and then what I can take during the game and after the game. The next thing I talked about was what I thought the target audience would be and also what sort of format the project will be in.
I believe I could done alot better in the presentation because I failed to talk in a professional way. I lost sight that I should be talking as if I was wanting the job.

budget planning and proposal

Budget Planning
For my assignment 'a day in the life of...' I was asked to come up with a budget plan for my photography work. Even though we weren't paying for anything we had treat it like it was a real job.
To start off with I had to write down what equipment would be needed for this project. I first had to write down equipment needed for the pre-production of the project, things such as the camera would of been needed to take a few test shots. I also had to write what personal would be involved in that side of the project but since there's just me and wrote me. With that done I then wrote down equipment needed for the actual shooting of the project. So I put stuff like camera and tripod and memory card. Then the final thing was to write what post-production equipment I would need like editing software.
After this was all done I had to break the whole thing down by putting how much each thing cost in each section of the project. I visited sites such as hireacamera.com to find hiring charges for photography equipment.
Once I finished the budget breakdown I summarize the budget by adding it all up for an overall number.
At first I wasn't sure about doing the budget, I wasn't sure why we had to do it since we weren't paying for anything but I think its good practice for later on in the life.

Proposal
Since we had to treat this like a proper job we had to come up with a proposal explaining why we think doing what we want do for the project is a good idea to do.
To start off with I talk about the theme behind my whole project which is football and I explained why I chose this football as a subject to photograph. After that was done I explained what sort of style the project is going to be, saying it was going to be a series of photographs. I also included how long it was going to take to do the project and what other photographers work you can compare it to.
It may seem a bit obvious but I also had to include the genre of the project which is sport. Then came selling piont of the proposal and that was to explain the purpose of the project and what message I was trying to get across. I took me a while to think of a purpose but i got there in the end up.
After explaining the purpose of the project I then went onto to talk about who the target audience is of the series of photographs. Explaining that it was football fans of all ages to enjoy and talk about.
The last part of the proposal was to talk about the research that you had done on chosen artists or photographers. The photographer that I had researched about were Stuart Clarke who is football photographer and Levon Biss who is a sports photographer. In the proposal I explained what work these photographers had done and how it links to the work that I am going to do.
The last thing to do in the proposal was write down a few contact details.
And again event though the prposal isn't been looked at by business people its still good practice.

photographer research and timeline

History of photography timeline
For my new project I have been asked to create a timeline showing the history of photography. Showing the different technological breakthroughs and to show social and cultural factors as well. To start with I collected notes and then selected the more important factors and placed them into a timeline. Which is the most obvious thing to do. To make it easier I placed the social and cultural factors on top of the timeline and the breakhroughs in photography on the bottom of the timeline.

Photographer research
Before I can do my photography work I need to research two photographers who do the same sort of work as I want to do. I need to finish finding images that have been taken by them and annotate them, saying what I like about it and how I can link it to my own work. So far I have found photographs on one of them. I found a few images taken by Stuart Clarke who his a football photographer. The other football photographer I am researching is Levon Biss who is a sports photographer and his most famous project is One love.

What do I think of the project so far?
So far I think the project has been ok. I haven't really struggled with anything yet and I hope I don't either. I also kind of like the project because it gives me a chance to do my photography work and I can't wait for that.

Narration and recording

How was your final narration put together?
To put my script together I looked at all the research notes that I had and took out the most relevant parts of the notes to make the script. Once I had recorded my script, I inserted onto the computer onto itunes. Then to make sure the narration went onto garage band, I created an AAC version of it and dragged and dropped that version onto the song I had created on garage band. Then I put the completed piece onto itunes and then put into imovie.

Describe any difficulties experienced and how you resolved them?
I think the most difficult thing I faced was the timing of the narration. Trying to g the narration to near 3 minutes was difficult. To resolve it I cut a few bits out using garage band.

Did you use helpful tasks?
To help with my narration I timed it using a stopwatch on my phone. This helped with my narration as it gave an accurate time on how long it was.

Did timing your narration help you make any important decisions?
Timing my narration helped make the decision that I should shorten because it was way over 3 minutes.

Explain the process involved in recording your narration?
To record the narration I used a voice recorder. To record your voice you first pressed the middle red button once you pressed the button the middle would flash meaning it is ready to record then you pressed it again and it stopped flashing and it recorded your voice each time you wanted a breath you could just pause it and then continue and if you wanted to start it again you pressed stop and pressed the middle button again. Once you had finished your recording you put your recordings onto the computer then you would drag and drop them onto itunes then you would create AAC versions of the recordings so you could put them on garage band. Then you dragged and dropped the recording you wanted onto your music on garage band and from there you could cut bits out of the recording. Then when you rmusic and narration was finished you could put into itunes and from there put it on imovie. Then you organized it so the images fit with the narration by changing the duration of the image and then you have finished.

Detail any difficulties you experienced and how you overcame them?
I think the most difficult thing about recording was trying not to stutter and get mixed up. I overcame this by lying both sheets out in front of me and reading it to myself and then began my recording.

Did anything surprising happen that you did not expect?
There wasn't anything surprising about the recording I think was surprised most about how my voice sounded it didn't sound like me.

What would you do differently next time?
Next time I would probably find more high quality images I found it difficult this time around but next time I found look it books and scan them into the computer.

What do you feel worked and why?
I think the narration and the images worked well because they went together properly and I believe the music was good as well because it was quiet but you could still hear it and you could the narration clearly as well.

Do you think the slideshow was successful in giving a good insight into your chosen photojournalist?
I do believe the slideshow gave a good insight into his life as gave the key factors about such as where he travelled to take photos and how he formed the magnum agency so yes I do believe a good insight into his life but sure there could be more information about him put into the slideshow but it might not be relevant.

What has been your overall experience of this project ?

I think this project was the most difficult to date but I didn't find it extremely hard. My favourite part of the brief was the research of the chosen journalist because I am good at that sort of thing. I believe I have developed new skills since completing the mood slideshow such as being able to mix music and speech together y cutting bits out and fitting it with the music.
How well do you feel you have settled in at college so far?

Since starting college in September I feel as if I have settled in rather well with the course. I haven't anything that difficult yet and I feel as if I have understood the tasks that I have been given as well. I have also found places in colleges really easy to find as well.

Have you enjoyed getting to know your classmates and have you formed any friendships within the group?

I must say that when I started at college I didn't believe that I would make friends so quickly but I have. I have friends with most people in the group and I do get along with most of them.

what skills have you learned so far?

Before I came to college I had never used an imac and when I used one at college for the first time I wasn't sure how to navigate it but by experimenting I found easy to use. I also believe I have developed a few basic skills in music production by using garage band. When I first used garage band I didn't know what to expect but I ended up coming up with a piece of catchy music.
I have developed skills on imovie. Skills such as adding images, cropping the images, adding music and making sure the music fit in time with the images are skills that I believe I have developed.

Did you enjoy creating music using garage band?

When I first used garage band I thought I was going to be so difficult to use but it wasn't, it was really user friendly and I really enjoyed creating pieces of music.

What was particlarly challenging about creating the mood slideshow?

I think the most challenging thing about creating the mood slideshow was fitting the music in time with the number of images you had and the time of the images. I t was all hard to fit together but eventually it all fit into place.

What have you found most challenging about your work as a whole so far?

I think the most challenging thing that I have done so far was fitting the images in time with the piece of music on the mood slideshow because sometimes the music would stop and the images would keep going with no music.

Are you pleased with your mood slideshow?

I am definetly pleased with my mood slideshow. My mood was cheerful and I believed the music was cheerful and it suited the images that I chose.

What skills are looking forward to developing?

I hope to develop skills more in editing and special effetcs because thats the area I want to do.

What has been your favourite experinece so far on the course?

My favourite experience so far would be working on garage band and I would like to do more work on it.

What skills and abilities do you hope to improve upon during your time on the course?

I hope to develop better skills in editing and post production.

blog update

What is a photojournalist?

A photojournalist is a journalist who presents a story primarily through the use of photographs.

Who is your chosen photojournalist?
their wo
For my photojournalism project I chose the photojournalist, Henri Cartier-Bresson. The reason I chose him was because he has travelled most of the world and he was alive through most of the major 20th century events so he has seen alot.

What stands out about their work?

I think what stands out most about Cartier-Bresson's is the fact that in most of his photographs there are people in it and they are usually the focus of attention on his photographs.

What do you think about their work?

I do find Cartier-Bresson's work interresting. What I find most interesting about his work is his decisive moment photographs the way he captured the man just before he hit the puddle is brilliant.

Describe 3 of their photographs?

One of his photographs is of man jumping over a puddle and it was captured just before he hit the puddle. The photograph was titled the decisive moment. Another one of his photographs is titled hyeres and it shows a person cycling by past some stairs and bresson is a the top of the stairs and he waited for something to come by and he got what he wanted. Anoother photograph of his is entitled Harlem 1947 and it shows 2 black men standing around.

Do you think they are important photographs?

I do believe the decisive moment photograph is important as it can inspire other photojournalists. It can do this as cartier-bresson didn't ask the man to jump other the puddle he saw something and stuck his camera through a gate.

What have you done so far?

So far I have finished my resaerch about my photojournalist. I am still collecting photographs because it is difficult to find the title and date for them. I am half way through my script and I have done my music.

What research methods have you used?

Mostly I have used the internet but I have used books while looking for photographs.

What books/websites have you found useful?

The websites that I have found useful are the cartier-bresson foundation page because it gives a brief biography of him. The book I used was called the europeans. It was useful as it had lots of photographs including the title and the date.

What are your thoughts about what you have learnt about your chosen photojournalist?

Well I believe I have learnt alot about Cartier-Bresson in such a short time. Such as where he has been across the world and where he has had his exhibits.

Have you encountered any difficulties?

Well the thing I am finding most difficult is looking for photographs with the title and date and I haven't overcome this difficulty yet.

How do you feel the different elements of your work are fitting togehter?

Well I feel the music is ftting really well with the images and the narration but I am finding it difficult to fit the images to the narration.

Have you watched anything to inspire you?

Well I have watched two documentaries on Cartier-Bresson. One was called the impassioned eye which was introduced in 2006 and the other one was called the genius of photography.

How can you incoporate any inspiration into your own work?

I can incoporate some inspiration such as in the impassioned eye there was a slow piano music played in the background and that made me think why not use a qiuet sounding piano so the narration can be heard.

Has it made you consider something you need to do that you didn't think about before?

It hasn't made me consider much just the music that's all.

Discuss what you still have left to do?

Well I need to complete my script and to complete that I am taking the most important bits out of the research and using it in the script. I also need to finish collecting images and to collect these I am going to have to scan some into a computer.
